大分前に評判になった、"Science Fair Season"という本のカバーをたまたま見たのだが、そこにオバマ大統領の演説の一節が引用されていた。
We need to teach our kids that it's not just the winner of the
Super Bowl who deserves to be celebrated, but the winner of the science fair.(@ 2011 State of the Union)
おそらく、本音。
この国では、子供だろうが、本気で興味を持っているなら、周囲の大人はできる限りそれを支えようとする。もちろん子供の境遇は千差万別。だが、恵まれていないからこそ、科学に全てを賭けるつもりになる子供も少なくない。そして、支援を受けながら、互いに競い合うのである。そんな社会であることがこの本でよくわかる。
科学実験の楽しさを子供に知ってもらおうと、一律的な啓蒙活動にいそしみ、皆で仲良く科学への理解を深めていきましょう型学習を繰り広げる国とは全く違う姿勢。
その結果はいわずもがな。
この本には、様々な科学キッズが登場するが、それぞれの章のタイトルと引用文が秀逸。
それを見ていて、ふと思ったのだが、理系の子を育てる気がない国だと、以下のような一言になるのかも・・・。
